As of December 31st, 2009, new European Union animal identification regulations require the use of electronic identification devices in addition to conventional animal ear tags. To meet the needs of the new regulations, Prionics offers the most comprehensive and efficient range of Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) solutions for electronic identification of farm animals.
The European Union (EU) has adopted new regulations requiring farm animals to be identified by a double identification system, involving the combined use of an ear tag and an electronic identification device. A double identification system will be obligatory for all sheep and goats born after December 31st, 2009. Cattle identification is planned as a next step. For this application, Prionics Italia produces and markets a comprehensive and efficient range of Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) solutions for the electronic identification of farm animals and pets.
Communication via radio frequencies
Current traceability systems identify animals through the application of ear tags – fixed to both ears – combined with a passport that records data relating to each animal. The electronic identification devices that will soon be required for sheep and goats are based on RFID. This automatic identification method relies on storing and retrieving remote data using an identification device with a transponder and a reader. The reader and transponder communicate using radio frequencies. The operational frequency of these devices is kept low so as not to harm the animal. Every animal is assigned a transponder, each with a unique code containing information such as the country code and the national identification code.
Prionics Italia offers RFID transponders that are contained either in an ear tag or in a ceramic capsule with a high specific weight, known as a ruminal bolus. The bolus is introduced into the animal orally using a special applicator and is positioned permanently in the reticulum, or second chamber of the animal’s gastrointestinal tract. Different weights of boli are available for different species and ages of animals.
Healthy Animals, Safe Food
When a disease outbreak occurs, public health authorities need to be able to identify the animals affected and their whereabouts quickly. Using Prionics Italia’s RFID products enhances public food safety by enabling animal health officials to track animals at all stages from birth through to processing.
