Our first issue of eScope in 2008 marks the beginning of a new format. Besides changes to the publication’s design, a number of functional improvements have been implemented. The most important improvement is the search function which will enable fast and easy searches using keywords to access all published, archived issues of eScope. Another new feature is the instant viewing of a menu alongside the editorial page for each issue. Navigation through archived issues has been also improved. By clicking on the link to an archived issue, a menu pops open to provide an overview of the articles in that particular issue. The larger font size of eScope text will further ease the use of our publication. There are many aspects of eScope however, that remain unchanged; in particular, its purpose. We will continue to inform you of new developments in our areas of activity, with the quality you have grown accustomed to.

In this issue we report on the approval of Prionics new test for the diagnosis of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies in sheep and goats – the Prionics®-Check PrioSTRIP SR. The Prionics test has been approved for testing in Switzerland because of the excellent results the test scored in a laboratory evaluation. Approval of the test for use in the European Union is pending. Also in this issue is a report on Prionics participation in the Swiss Bovine Viral Diarrhoea eradication program. In this year alone, over 200,000 samples will be tested using the PrioCHECK® BVDV Ag PIfocus, giving Prionics extensive hands-on experience of which our customers can profit.

Another recent development is the relocation of our Dutch affiliate, Prionics Lelystad. The larger production facilities will enable Prionics to produce larger quantities of product to quickly respond to our customers’ needs.

Last but not least, read about a new development in the human prion disease, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. A recent discovery reported in a British science journal unleashes some disturbing news about containing Mad Cow Disease.

I look forward to receiving feedback on the new format of eScope. Please send your comments to: escope@prionics.com
